Sample

I. INHERITANCE My grandmother buried three things in the yard: a tin of coins, a photograph, and a name she was told to stop using. We dug for the coins. II. WHAT THE RAIN SAID Rain on a zinc roof is the only language my family speaks fluently — all of us louder, none of us listening, the whole house agreeing for the length of a storm. III. TRANSLATION When I say home the word arrives late, carrying somebody else's luggage, asking to be forgiven in a borrowed accent.
